be that as it may, andrea, can you not take it out on me? :)
thou shalt not bow down thyself to them [false gods and idols], nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; and showing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.
exodus 20:5-6
here God is saying that yes, He
is a jealous God.. meaning that, as our Creator, He will not have us, His creations, worship something other than Him, something undeserving of our worship - while He
does deserve it.
and the LORD descended in the cloud, and stood with him [moses] there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD. and the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, the LORD, the LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and to the fourth generation.
exodus 34:5-7
God says that He loves us, but that love does not automatically forgive our sins; He is also a just God who demands obedience, thus the reason for Jesus (our savior).
